Geert Smits

Born in Helden, Holland, Geert Smits began his musical studies in the Tilbrug’s Conservatory, specializing later in the Sweelinck Conservatorium of Amsterdam with Bernard Kruysen. After obtaining his degree cum laude, he continued his training with Margaret Honig, Udo Reinemann, Robert Holl, Walter Berry, Dietrich Discher- Dieskau, Elio Battaglia and Mikael Eliasen.

Geert Smits has been invited to sing in the most important European opera theatres and auditoriums like Concertgebouw of Amsterdam, Staatsoper of Vienna or the Nederlandse Opera as well as  to the most prestigious festivals like the one in Salzburg or Melbourne. He has worked under the baton of the most important and international stage directors, like Sir John Eliot Gardiner, Sylvain Cambreling, Riccardo Chailly, Jos van Veldhoven or René Jacobs, among others.

His operatic repertoire covers much of the gender of the Classical and Romantic period, with some forays into the Baroque opera. Among other titles, he has performed various roles in L’ Orfeo, Le nozze di Figaro, Fidelio, Leonore, I Pagliacci, La Favorita, Ariadne auf Naxos, Der Freischütz, Carmen, Das Rheingold, Der fliegende Holländer, Der Rosenkavalier or Die Frau ohne Schatten. In addition, Geert Smits has participated in Die Jahreszeiten by Haydn, Novena Sinfonía and Missa Solemnis by Beethoven, Matthäus Passion by Bach and some pieces by Schubert, Mahler, etc.

Geert Smits has collaborated with labels as Channel Classics, Harmonia Mundi or Donemus Record for the implementation of various CD’s. Among other awards, he has received the Nederlandse Muziekprijs award and the prestigious Belvedere.
