Christoph Prégardien

Born in Limburg, Germany, Christoph Prégardien began his musical education as a choirboy. He then studied singing with Martin Gründler and Karlheinz Jarius in Frankfurt, Carca Castellani in Milan, Alois Treml in Stuttgart and attended Hartmut Höll’s lieder- class.

Recognized as an emintent recitalist, Christoph Prégardien is regularly welcomed at the major recital venues of Paris, London, Brussels, Berlin, Cologne, Amsterdam, Salzburg, Zurich, Vienna, Barcelona and Geneva, as well as during his concert tours throughout Italy, Japan nad North America. A Longstanding collaboration unites him with his favourite piano partners Michael Gees and Andreas Staier.

Very considered among the lyric tenors, Christoph Prégardien collaborates with very prestigious conductors like Daniel Barenboim, Roberto Chaillu, Sir John Eliot Gardiner, Nikolaus Harnoncourt, Philippe Herreweghe, Kent Nagano, Wolfgang Sawallisch or Christian Thielemann. His extense repertoire includes barroque (Monteverdi, Purcell, Schütz), classical and romantic oratorios and works of the twentieth century by Britten, Killmayer, Rihm or Stravinsky. He has performed leading roles in Operas such as Die Zauberflöte, La Clemenza di Tito, Don Giovanni, Il Barviere di Siviglia or Falstaff.

Soloist of Choice for renowned orchestras, he performed with the Berlin and Vienna Philharmonic, Concentus Musicus Wien, Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks, Royal Concertgebow Orchestra, Gewandhausorchester Leipzig, London Philharmonia, Staatskapelle Dresden, Radio France Philharmonic Orchestra or the Montréal, Boston, St. Louis and San Francisco Symphony Orchestras, among others.

Major labels such as BMG, EMI, Deutsche Grammophon, Philips, Sony, Erato and Teldec have recorded an important part of his repertoire. He is represented on more than 130 titles, including nearly his entire active repertoire.

His recordings of German Romantic Lied repertoire have been highly acclaimed by the public and press and have received international awards including the prestigious Orphée d’ Or of the Académie du Disque Lyrique- Priz Georg Solti, Preis der Deutschen Schallplattenkritik, Edison Award, Cannes Classical Award and Diapason d’ Or. Christoph Prégardien recently started a new long-term collaboration with the Dutch Label Challenge Classics: their first recordings of Schubert's "Die schöne Müllerin", was honoured with the MIDEM ‘Record of the Year' Award 2009 during the MIDEM, the world's major trade fair for music. Furthermore, the Duo Christoph Prégardien/Michael Gees received the MIDEM ‘Vocal Recitals' Award 2009.

An important aspect in musical life of Christoph Prégardien is his intensive and varied educational work. Christoph Prégardien was in charge of a vocal class at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater in Zurich. Since 2004 he is a professor at the Musikhochschule Köln.
